OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of hepatic steatosis in routine ultrasound examinations. METHODS: Transabdominal ultrasound performed in Fertile Clinic from January 2012 to December 2013. From the 1687 analyzed, 49 were excluded for not having sufficient data for analysis. Of the remaining 1638, 176 had the diagnosis hepatic steatosis in various degrees. The prevalence was calculatéd according to the degree of steatosis. Other variables analyzed were the distribution of steatosis by sex and age. RESULTS: The prevalence of hepatic steatosis GI was significant because other studies have reported a poor accuracy in identifying this degree of steatosis. In the case of steatosis G II and G III, data was lower than the literature, but it still has clinical and epidemiological importance because the diagnosis of steatosis was incidental. CONCLUSION: the global prevalence of steatosis was 9.2%. In gender distribution, the most affected were women and in relation to age, the highest prevalence was in the 5th decade of life.
