INTRODUCTION: Cataract is defined by the presence of opacity of the lens and can be classified according to its origin. B-scan ultrasonography is an important adjuvant for the clinical evaluation of various ocular and orbital diseases. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the importance of ultrasonography in the preoperative evaluation of cataract. METHODS: Literature review carried out in PubMed and VHL databases from 2014 to 2018 RESULTS: The sample resulted in 10 scientific articles for final analysis. Of these 80% (8) of the database Pubmed and 20% (2) of the VHL. Duplicate articles accounted for 40% (4) Pubmed / VHL. Articles published in 2015 with 40% of the studies prevailed, it will be shown the summary the selected studies. CONCLUSION: The echographic evaluation before any ophthalmologic surgery helps in the surgical planning and to guide the patients’ expectations, since it allows demonstrating the extension and the location of the vitreous opacities. By allowing access to the posterior segment of the eyeball and diagnosing pathologies may influence the surgical strategy and the visual prognosis of the patient after cataract surgery.
