The carotid atherosclerotic disease presents slow symptomatology and embolization is the most important event. The ultrasound and Doppler has brought attention for assessment of carotid aterosclerotic disease in patients with atherosclerosis risk, because the identification of carotid plaques makes possible to take measures that reduce the progression of the disease. The Doppler ultrasound examination includes the carotid artery and intima-media thickness measurement, characterization of the carotid plaques and quantification of the stenosis. Therefore, this review aims to describe the usefulness of the Doppler ultrasound in the diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis and in the quantification of stenosis of the carotid system.
