Abstract

Menisci play important roles in the maintenance of homeostasis in the knee joints, force transmission, shock absorption, joint lubrication, joint stability, and proprioception. Meniscal tears are common in both athletes and nonathletes. Meniscal injury not only occurs in sports activities, but also in everyday situations when a sudden change of direction is attempted. It usually results from degenerative or traumatic changes. High-resolution ultrasound exhibited relatively high accuracy in the detection of meniscal tears. The sensitivity and negative predictive value for detection of lateral meniscal tears tended to be low. The characteristic sonographic findings of meniscal tear are protrusion and hypoechoic stripe through the meniscus.
