Most medical specialties use information and communication technology for the development of remote medical practice. Purpose: make a literature review on the feasibility and effectiveness of the deployment of telemedicine services and tele-ultrasound, justifying the investment in technology. This study also contributes for the body of knowledge in tele-ultrasound, to determine to what degree this technology can assist in the standard care of patients. Method: Review the Medline database in the period between 1999 and 2012. Conclusions: The literature shows that telemedicine and tele-ultrasound are effective in providing imaging services, mainly, to poor populations and can reduce the costs of healthcare, reducing hospitalization and unnecessary surgical procedures. Although technology barriers for the implementation of tele-sonography are continuously disappearing, the non-technical barriers still persist.
