Abstract

Due to the increased metabolic demands during pregnancy, maternal body produces numerous systemic changes. Among them is the emergence of the placenta and other attachments, allowing the mother-ovular nutritional exchanges. Ultrasonography, as in the first quarter, allows detailed visualization of the placenta. The aspects that can be analyzed to placental level are: location, thickness, diversity, morphology and function. In addition, THERE IS the possibility of obtaining morphological and functional details, creating a high impact on pregnancy monitoring, both high and low risk, and directly related to fetal outcome. In this article, the authors discuss the normal sonographic aspects and main pathologies related to the placenta.
