Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the importance of transfontanellar ultrasound in cerebral pathology newborns. METHODS: This is an observational, cross-sectional retrospective, held at ultrasound of a municipal hospital at Goiânia - GO after approved by the Research Ethics Committee of HMDI. The sample included 1119 transfontanellar ultrasound examinations between 2014 and 2015. RESULTS: Of 1119 ultrasound examinations analyzed between 2014 and 2015, carried out in the municipal hospital, met 181 changes. The examinations only 14% showed changes. These changes were major ventriculomegaly 26%, haemorrhages 26%, dilatations with 11%, hydrocephalus 11%, various cysts with 8%, leukomalacia 3%. In this study 0.5% of the changes were leukomalacia, so six cases. six cases of periventricular prematurity was one of the determining factors as a requirement for the exam, but the low weight was found in only one case, with 845 grams, 20% of cases were associated with toxoplasmosis. Another important factor is bleeding in up to fourth grade, which when added together amounts to 26% of all changes. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of transfontanellar ultrasound changes by leukomalacia was 0.5%. The main alterations were ventriculomegaly 26%, bleeding 26%, dilatations 11%, hydrocephalus 11%.
